01) manually de-weed the Year 4 Area as opportunity arises and before seed has set. Prevent successive generations of weeds by these means. Place unseeded, annual weeds in the trench in the Year 2 Area as the trench and suitable annual weeds become available. Omit the perennial weeds. Dispose of these securely off site.
UNDERTAKING THE SECOND YEAR OF
THE R J HARRIS-STYLE ALLOTMENT
In the Year 1 Area, in the second year
of the R J Harris-style allotment
01) from November, harvest Winter Harvesting Cabbages (planted out in July of the first year of the R J Harris-style allotment). Continue the harvesting until crop and bed surface are cleared
02) in the Spring, at the start of the second moon quarter of the soonest suitable month, sow pot marigold seeds into all of the available bed surfaces. Sustain the flower as the Year 1 Area's sole crop (strawberries excepted) for the whole of the second year of the R J Harris-style allotment. Deadhead to maintain constant blossoming and -- highly importantly -- to avoid seed setting. See pages 89 to 92 of 'R J Harris's Moon Gardening'
03) take the first harvest from the strawberry plants
04) complete the Year 1 Area's second year with emptied, spade-turned bed surfaces fully exposed to Winter's conditions.
