Pic, taken in the walled garden at Tresillian Olive Harris

"This marigold is known as Scotch Prize," says head gardener R J Harris. "It came into the UK from Mexico, brought in by the Huguenot refugees at about 1570. This variety gained particular favour with the Scottish and North of England florists at the end of the 1800s. It produces masses of single mahogany-hued flowers, each with golden and yellow stripes on its petals. Compared to the common-or-garden pot marigold -- which I plant in the carrot beds to ward off the carrot fly -- it is an aristocrat of the marigold family."
