FIRST OF THREE PAGES OF SOMERSETSHIRE LIST

Telephone (or e-mail, if that is possible) any of the following commercial centres and private owners to make an appointment to collect horse manure for use in the garden in place of mixed farmyard manure -- which is becoming increasingly difficult to acquire in the United Kingdom, and for which horse manure is an ideal substitute. At the same time, arrange collection method and agree on a price if a price is charged. Note that many sources of supply are glad to give away the material.

Do not attempt to collect without first arranging to do so. These are working establishments, and cannot cater for unexpected visitors.

Go equipped with stout plastic sacks (not kitchen-bin liners or supermarket shopping bags, which are insufficiently strong). When collecting, no more than half fill a plastic sack. Horse manure -- fresh or composted -- is weighty. First protect the car's surfaces with plastic sheeting or dust sheets. Fresh horse manure is wet (although old, composted material -- of which many centres have a great deal, which is highly worth seeking out -- is comparatively dry). After collecting and unloading, spray the car's interior with a sweetening aerosol spray. Fresh horse manure is strongly ammonia-charged. Fully-composted material has little smell.

Horse manure may be applied to the soil in its fresh state (unlike mixed farmyard manure), but it is a better soil conditioner after one or two years of composting (during which time it loses its characteristic odour and becomes easy to handle). For a detailed account of head gardener R J Harris's ways of managing and using horse manure read the sections MANURE/1 and MANURE/2 of

Gardeners practising on the Somersetshire/Devonshire border or the Somersetshire/Dorsetshire border or the Somersetshire/Wiltshire border are advised to consult also the Devonshire list or the Dorsetshire list or the Wiltshire list for nearby non-Somersetshire locations (using the computer's back button to return to this point).

Horse managers wishing to be included in this or any of the other published lists should contact reallyusefulbooks@boltblue.com to make an arrangement. Inclusion is free.

Petruth Paddocks comments: Our manure business is run by our 11-year-old son -- Stephen. He has small bags at £1.50 and big bags at £2.50. The bags are supplied and are ready-filled for collection. The small bag one person could lift into a car; the big bag needs two persons, probably, to lift it in. Four small bags cost £5.00, five large bags cost £10.00. Local delivery is free for orders over £10.00. This is fully-composted horse manure plus worms, which is important, because the worms reduce it in volume by about one-third. They also turn it into especially top quality stuff, and make it better than the average as a soil conditioner.
