FIRST OF FIVE PAGES OF SURREY LIST
Telephone (or e-mail, if that is possible) any of the following commercial centres and private owners to make an appointment to collect horse manure. At the same time, arrange collection method and agree on price if a price is charged. Note that many centres are glad to give away the material.
Do not attempt to collect without first arranging to do so. These are working establishments, and cannot cater for unexpected visitors.
Go equipped with stout plastic sacks (not kitchen-bin liners or supermarket shopping bags, which are insufficiently strong). When collecting, no more than half fill a plastic sack. Horse manure -- fresh or composted -- is weighty. First protect the car's surfaces with plastic sheeting or dust sheets. Fresh horse manure is wet (although old, composted material -- of which many centres have a great deal, which is highly worth seeking out -- is comparatively dry). After collecting and unloading, spray the car's interior with a sweetening aerosol spray. Horse manure is strongly ammonia-charged.
Horse manure may be applied to the soil in its fresh state (unlike mixed farmyard manure), but it is a better soil conditioner after one or two years of composting (during which time it loses its characteristic odour and becomes easy to handle). For a detailed account of head gardener R J Harris's ways of managing and using horse manure read the sections MANURE/1 and MANURE/2 of

Gardeners practising on the Surrey/Kent border or the Surrey/London border or the Surrey/Hampshire border or the Surrey/Sussex border are advised to consult also the Kent list or the London list or the Hampshire list or the Sussex list for nearby non-Surrey locations (using the computer's back button to return to this point).
Horse managers wishing to have their premises included in this list should contact reallyusefulbooks@boltblue.com to make an arrangement. Inclusion is free.
